With black leggings all the rage on the fashion front, there are times when they work and when they don’t. Many girls are wearing black leggings as they see the pictured trend in magazines and worn by their favorite celebrities. In today’s blog we’ll touch on what works, what doesn’t, and why.
Lindsay Lohan, a long-time ambassador of leggings, recently released a line including a pair that are snagged, shredded, and ripped. Remember, just because it’s a trend doesn’t mean we should adopt it. Just because some girls experiment with the extreme or edgy look for shock value doesn’t mean it’s attractive, compatible with our personal style, or complimentary to where we’re going.
When leggings are worn under a sharp looking suit, a pretty dress, or a nice skirt, the sporty look of black leggings can be too weighty and too casual, sending mixed messages. Black leggings can create too much dark / light contrast and draw too much attention downward.
That said, you don’t have to toss out your black leggings! There are great ways to make them work. When black is repeated in the color of the outfit, black leggings are better balanced and look terrific. When wearing black leggings underneath a tan top or dress, there’s less dark / light contrast, and the sporty look becomes compatible. Worn underneath a sporty tunic, black leggings are just plain fun.

I don’t mind leggings, but I’ve seen a lot of girls and women who don’t realize that their leggings are NOT opaque. Pretty tacky. Make sure your leggings are opaque and not just footless tights!
