“You are what you eat.”  ”Sit like a lady.”  “Walk tall, remember who you are.”  Do any of these comments sound familiar?  How about the one that says, “sooner or later we all quote our mothers”? Each of us are a product of our environment, and we soak up more wisdom from our mothers than we realize.  Some of this was spoken, but much of what we learned is unspoken.   As our tribute to all of the beautiful mothers out there, we decided to ask the fashion and image experts from Conselle what their mothers or grandmothers taught them about beauty.  We’d love to hear your comments as well!

“My mom loved to dress me up when I was a little girl, and I still love to dress up!  She taught me to take care of yourself, have fun doing it, and enjoy looking your best.”  Ann Johnson

“Lucky for me, I’ve had an wonderful mother as a teacher.  When I was 12, my mother took me to the Clinique Counter to have my make-up done and learn about skin care.  Although I wore little more than mascara and lip gloss, I gained an understanding of how to take care of myself as a young woman.  Later on, when I had the opportunity to travel, my mother taught me the “Dress for Success” concepts of having basic, versatile pieces, enabling me to pack light, but efficient, and effective, prepared for a great trip. ”  Dani Slaugh

“Always be true to yourself, carry yourself with confidence, and wear the right  clothes to the right place.”  Cristina Johnson

“My mom never dyes her hair and rarely wears makeup. My sisters and I tease her that she didn’t give us girl lessons, but she taught us that if your appearance is neat and coordinated, you don’t need a lot of makeup. (She also taught us how to sew and mend, which is very important when it comes to looking neat and coordinated…)”  Heidi Lynn Chochran

“From my grandmother about the importance of a slip, ‘Because ladies wear underwear, that’s why!’”  Cheryl Obermiller

“NEVER chew gum in public! She was right–statistically, people who chew gum in front of others are perceived as less intelligent and less economically stable.” Beth Yvette Strange

“‘Head, shoulders, knees and toes,’ is what my mother taught me regarding clothing fit, feel, and hem length.  Touch your head, shoulders, knees, and bend over and touch your toes.  If you can’t reach comfortably or bend modestly, you need a better fit.”  Judi Rasband

“I learned more from watching my mother, than from any particular thing that she said.”  Kathy Adams1a87977bc7aa6481418dcae9a37925de

How about you?  What did your mother teach you about fashion and beauty?

Spring is a great time to update your wardrobe.  Adding whites and bright colors is a great way to create the look and feel of Spring.  Choose pieces that match your lifestyle, personal style, coloring and figure.  Beware of articles and advertisements that list those things you “must have” this season.   No matter how trendy the style may be, there are no “must haves.”    Why?  Because we each have our own, unique lifestyle, personal style, coloring, and figure.  What may be a harmonious look for one person, can be completely awful for another.  Here are a few examples of “must haves” that relatively few can wear well, and many can just plain do without.  The photo above shows a popular trend right now, short shorts, pastels and polka-dots.  All of these characteristic reflect a personal style that is very Yin oriented.   If your coloring is fair, your figure is just right, and your personal style is playful and whimsical, then this look may work for you.  If not, you may end up looking like you’re trying to be someone else.  More trend tips:

The big bold print in the red shirt would completely drown out a petite woman or someone with lighter hair and skin.

Jumpsuits can be fun, but not if you are looking to minimize larger shoulders and arms. Not to mention that the mid-section must be the same size as the garment, not too long or too short.

A short, wrap style dress would only attract attention to larger legs.

Nude heals blend in with the color of the legs, giving the illusion of no shoes. The look can be unbalanced. With a heavy black sweater, this model looks very top heavy.

Next time you see a list of “must haves”, ask yourself, “Does this print / color enhance my own coloring, or does it fight with it?  What is the first thing others see when they look at me?  Is their attention going where I want it to go?”  Remember that you can pick and choose the trends you want to adopt this season.  Choose those that will enhance your wonderful features, if the “must have” look doesn’t do that, then let someone else have it.

today show scan color1The holidays may be over, but this holiday fashion clip from the Today Show on December 12, 2012 keeps coming back to mind.  The segment is titled, Holiday Fashion for full-figured women.  I truly believe that women everywhere can look and feel terrific, regardless of size.   But I would not be taking advise from this segment’s “expert”, who is not a good example herself.  Our well-meaning “expert”, seen on the far left, is wearing a small scale spotty black and white print dress, that emphasizes her size by extreme contrast.  She is also wearing black stockings stuffed into nude colored pumps.   Just because nude shoes are in style right now, doesn’t mean that they work with weighty black stockings.  In fact, nude colored shoes don’t really work well with any dark colored skirts or dresses.  Instead of elongating the look, we appear to have no shoes on at all. I continue to be amazed by what passes for an expert these days! And her sitting position?  NOT PROFESSIONAL.  Somebody, please teach her how to sit.  Our experts really need to be more refined.

Today show - metallic jeans

Today show stuffed in boots

Add to that…the models are stuffed into their clothes.  A little ease, please.  Horizontal stress lines, crossing this model’s thighs, are just screaming for a better fit.  The rolled up pants add visual weight and provide another horizontal line making her look both shorter and wider.  The short little boot shoes add more weight yet.

In this new year, consider what you read and see before buying into it.  Instead of buying every trend the next “expert” says is a great look, think about it.  Consider whether the look fits you….your figure type, your personal coloring, your values, your personality and your roles.  Learn to recognize when that hot new style just doesn’t work.

  • Do you have trouble getting your ideas accepted by others?
  • Do you often justify or make excuses for the way you look?
  • Do you dislike what you see when you catch a glimpse of yourself in a mirror or window glass?
  • Do you feel inadequate in knowing how to dress to communicate different moods or messages?
  • Do you limit the places you go because of the clothes you have to wear?
  • Do you feel uncomfortable or intimidated with others who are dressed well?
  • Do you feel frustrated or overwhelmed when shopping for clothes?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, attention to dress can help you.

Most people want to be attractive, but all too often they assume appearance just happens.  Some view it as a matter of luck, or an inherent trait.  Others continually wish, watch and wait for some sort of magic that will make them instantly attractive….turn them into a lion. However, it just doesn’t work that way.  It takes knowledge, thought, and effort.  For those who really want to create an attractive appearance, a personal stylist or image consultant holds the most hope and help.

At Conselle, we have three levels of support to help you reach your full potential.

This season’s voluminous coat styles are hippy and certainly created for the dramatic person.  The excess fabric can be comfortable for sure, but beware of looking bottom heavy, overwhelmed or super sloppy.  Here are some tips to pull off this look:
  • Find a coat with shoulder pads to balance the wider bottom, or add shoulder pads yourself.
  • Look for fabrics that are soft and not stiff.
  • Slim jeans, leggings, or a knee length pencil skirt work well on the bottom.
  • Finish it off with tall boots to provide a solid base.

Remember that you don’t have to buy into every trend that comes along. If this one appeals to you and your sense of flair, then try it out for a change of pace. If it doesn’t, just leave it in store.

fall cluster 2

Sweater from Organic by John Patrick, silk blouse by Equipment, carmel top from Crumpet, Jack Wills blazer, flared skirt from John Lewis, stiletto heels are Repetto, loafers from office.co.uk, satchel bag from oliverbonas.com.

I have recently worked with two different clients, each professing to shop economically,

and each with tons of clothes in their closets.  In both cases, despite the many clothes,

very few pieces actually worked together.  For the amount of money spent on clothes,

they should have a marvelous wardrobe.  Not a closet full of confusion.  Without

having a plan, many will go out and buy single items because they are inexpensive,

but these purchases cost them in the end.  No matter how inexpensive a shirt is, if

you never wear it, you paid too much!  That’s not economic.  The solution is to begin

shopping with a plan, a Cluster Plan.

Cluster Guidelines:

  • Find a source of inspiration - a pattern of colors in a print, stripe, or                                          plaid – to inspire the color scheme of your cluster.  She used the skirt                                                     (above) for inspiration.
  • Plan for 5 to 8 easy pieces of clothing - top and bottom pieces.
  • Select pieces that are basic - simple in style lines and shape.
  • Select pieces that go together - will work with at least three, four,                                                          or more other pieces.
  • Select pieces that are distinctly different from one another - no two                                         pieces alike, not yet.
  • Select accessories to go with the clothes - essential basic accessories first.
  • Gradually expand your cluster(s) - to meet all your wardrobe needs.

If you truly want to save money on your wardrobe but don’t want to sacrifice creativity,

versatility or individuality, clustering is a great solution!   Our September Newsletter

has been dedicated to the topic of clustering and provides even more information on

how to make this technique work for you.  If you are not yet getting Conselle’s

Summertime means that bathing suits, shorts and clingy T-shirts make us much more conscious of the shape we’ve got – and the shape we’d like to have.  This year, as you bare your body think again.  The image of the ideal female form is changing; many of us are still criticizing ourselves for qualities we should be praising.  The secret is knowing how to look at yourself – it may be time to start loving the body you’ve got – which is a real challenge when shopping for bathing suits. Take an objective look at yourself, then follow these 4 fitting tips when shopping the sales this summer.

1. Go Up a Size – Try one size larger.   When trying on bathing suits, if the suit is too tight, the edges cut into your body creating bulges where you’d rather no one look.  When a bathing suit fits a little looser, the skin is squeezed less and creates a smoother fit.

2. Bust size - Full-busted women need some extra support.  Try under-wire tops or a suit designed for long torsos as your use will take up some of the extra fabric. If you are smaller busted, try a halter neckline or a high boat neck style.

3. Waist size – If you’re wider than you want to be in the waist, look for diagonal stripes or a surplice fold to flatter your figure.

4. Hip size and shape - The higher the cut, generally the longer your legs appear.  The longer your legs appear, the leaner they look!   To minimize sabblebag thighs, go for a contemporary skirt style bathing suit.

Your body image influences everything you do – the way you think, the way you feel, the way you act and the way others react to you.  There truly are ways to dress every body type to look beautiful.  Contact Judith for a free 10 minute consultation and insights into her Slim Fit Clinic where she teaches you how to love the body you’ve got. http://conselle.com/conselle-service-clinics.php
