How to have both THIS and clothes that fit! Photo c/o eats.emedia.com

The holiday season can be one ongoing round of events featuring food, food, and more food — a lot of fun, but loaded with tasty high-calorie foods we can’t resist.  When it’s all over, we discover the turkey wasn’t the only thing that ended up stuffed!  Add to that, clothes won’t fit — and that’s no fun!  Here are my top seven tips for enjoying the variety of parties, turkey dinner and New Year’s buffet in the healthiest way possible.

  1. The day of the party, eat a low-calorie breakfast — better yet a small bowl of raw oatmeal, diced apple, and a few raisins.
  2. Don’t go to a party already hungry.  You only set yourself up to actually eat more.  Curb your appetite with a cup of soothing tea or bullion, a small yogurt, or a handful of nuts just before leaving.  It will give you a sense of fullness and you’ll be less likely to pig out at the party.
  3. At the party, check out all the food options.  Pick out one or two “must have” indulgences.  Take smaller portions, on a smaller plate, and eat with a smaller cocktail fork — bites will be smaller.  Then fill up on healthier low-calorie veggies, fruits, salads, and protein items.  Another strategy that allows you to sample all the options, but only a bite or two of each.
  4. Limit or avoid altogether the eggnog, party punch, and spirits.  Liquid calories add up in a hurry, often without you being aware.
  5. Once you’ve filled your plate, move away from the food tables.  Eat slowly, savoring every bite as you visit with friends.
  6. Throughout the holidays, visualize how terrific you’re going to look in that fitted New Year’s Eve outfit!  Keep that vision in your head to help you resist tempting holiday goodies.
  7. As the holidays come to an end, get back to your regular and healthy eating habits immediately.  Walk and talk with a friend.  Support is key to success.
