If you’ve walked through a department store or glanced through the pages of a fashion magazine lately, you’ve probably noticed one of the seasons hottest trends; gladiator shoes. They’re difficult to miss with dramatic 3-5 inch heels, glitzy metallic fabric or soft supple leather, and an abundance of buckles, nail heads, & other hardware. This trend is everywhere and people are sporting it with everything from jeans to dresses and even swim wear! So if you’re wondering how to make this fancy footwear work for you, ask yourself, “Do I love it, like, or hate it?!”
If you love it and you don’t mind spending the extra money on a fleeting fad that will certainly wear out its welcome in the next year or so, go for it. Enjoy the glitz, the drama, and the added height. Just be sure you don’t end up looking like Zena Warrior Princess. Tone it down with basic clothes and simple accessories. Let the shoes be the focus. Don’t wear them every day, they’ll lose their punch and you’ll look like you’re trying too hard.
If you like it, but don’t want to look like a Roman foot soldier, take the shoe’s eye catching elements and play them up in a different way. Find jewelry, a great bag, or a pretty pair of flats with metallic details or hardware embellishments. If you’re looking for added height, go ahead and find a great summer sandal with a heel, but a little less drama.
If you hate it and can’t understand why anyone would want to look like they’re preparing for battle with a pack of lions, don’t buy into it. This is an extreme style that will cycle through quickly. It’s not usually comfortable, it’s not appropriate for most occasions, and it is truly meant for the very young and adventurous.
So whether or not the gladiator style of footwear fashion will make it into your wardrobe, don’t miss out on all the fun of falling for a fad. This fall there are plenty of great ways to feel fresh and current this season from boyfriend jackets to oversized belts and beautifully patterned scarves to stylish hats. Find something you love and make it work for you!
